From the inside of the cover jacket:

What is the difference between toy and miniature breeds? Ninety years ago the Kennel Club compiled its original register of pedigree dogs, dividing the various breeds into two sections: sporting and non-sporting. Later, it became necessary to make further categories including the traditional house pets, the 'lap-dogs', 'comforters' and 'toys' - call them what you will, which were officially grouped under the title of toy breeds. This group comprises the first fourteen breeds dealt with in this book, from the Chihuahua to the Yorkshire Terrier. The miniatures covered include the miniature and toy poodle, the Schnauzer, Shetland Sheepdog and Boston Terrier, the Shih Tzu and Tibetan Apsos, Spaniels and Terriers.
